Family and Consumer Sciences
Program
The Bachelor of Science in Family and
Consumer Sciences is a strong interdisciplinary program which includes
coursework from a variety of areas. Approximately 69 semester hours are
required in core courses including nutrition, interior design, and child
development. A minor in
human nutrition or health; gerontology; or a specialization in youth issues,
business/media or early intervention can be selected in this program.
Faculty
The faculty at Winthrop is highly devoted to
teaching. Most of the teaching faculty hold their terminal degree, a Ph.D.,
indicating a high level of knowledge of their specialty areas. They also
participate in a variety of professional activities, coordinate other
Winthrop programs, and volunteer in Rock Hill and surrounding communities.
Richard W. Riley College of Education majors have plenty of opportunity to
interact with their professor and establish the contacts they will need for
advanced study and employment.
Internships/Co-ops
In Family and Consumer Sciences, students
have opportunities for cooperative education placement at a variety of
institutions and corporations in South Carolina and North Carolina.
Groups
and Professional Organizations
The Richard W. Riley College of Education
sponsors WINAFACS, Winthrop Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
The group's activities include leadership training and a variety of
community service projects.
Career
Graduates of the Family and Consumer
Sciences' can pursue careers with groups such as state consumer bureaus,
cooperative extension services, and local, county, and state agencies that
serve youth and families (First Step, Head Start, and Success by Six).
Graduate
School
Approximately 30% of Family and Consumer
Sciences graduates choose to continue their studies after receiving their
bachelor's degree. The acceptance rate for these graduates is 100%, with
many students choosing to stay at Winthrop for their graduate school work.
