Middle Level Education
Students
pursuing the B.S. in middle level education will be certified to
teach middle grades 5-8 in South Carolina. Students will be
certified to teach English/ language arts and one of the following:
math, science, or social studies. The middle level education program
trains pre-service teachers to work with young adolescents during
this crucial developmental stage, to implement the middle school
philosophy of teaming with other teachers and using small group
instruction to best meet young adolescents’ educational needs.

Winthrop’s middle-level
education program is one of only three middle school undergraduate
programs in the state. The state of South Carolina first instituted
middle school certification levels in July 2003. It is anticipated
that there will be great demand for well-prepared, fully certified
middle-level teachers resulting in numerous teaching opportunities
for graduates of this program.
