Bachelor of Science in
Exercise Science
The
Major
The Bachelor
of Science in Exercise Science was approved in the spring of 2008.
The
principal goal of the Exercise Science (EXSC) Program is to provide
students with sound academic preparation in the science of human
movement. Students will acquire knowledge, skills, and abilities
(KSA’s) related to the theoretical and practical components of
exercise science theory and practice.
Graduates will be leaders in the promotion and maintenance
of health, physical activity, and fitness within their workplace and
community settings or enroll in further study in exercise physiology
or allied health graduate professional programs.
The proposed curriculum will allow students to complete
prerequisites required for most physical therapy, occupational
therapy, and physician assistant programs.
Program
The Department of Health and Physical Education in the Richard W.
Riley College of Education houses the Exercise Science degree
program.
The degree requires 126 semester hours of coursework which
includes a full-time internship as the culminating experience.
The required coursework includes nutrition, diet and
weight control, exercise testing and prescription, anatomy,
physiology, kinesiology, strength and conditioning, exercise and
health promotion, and physical activity for the aging population. In
addition, students have 15 semester hours of selective.
Students planning for graduate study in physical therapy,
occupational therapy, exercise physiology, or physician assistant
can select required pre-requisite classes such as chemistry, physic
or psychology.
Students seeking careers in wellness can select courses
such as risk management, event management, or substance abuse
education.
The curriculum is designed to allow students to tailor their course
selections to meet their long term career goals in exercise science
or to meet pre-requisite requirements for future graduate education
in an allied health discipline.
Careers/graduate school
Each student can tailor a program to meet his or her career goals.
Students preparing for careers in community or
school-based recreational programs elect a course of study which
includes event and fiscal management of fitness programs. Those
seeking careers in the fitness industry (personal trainer, exercise
specialist, industrial or corporate fitness specialist, and health
clubs) elect advanced course work in health promotion and fitness.
Students seeking admission into graduate programs in
physical therapy, cardiac rehabilitation or physician’s assistant
focus their coursework in the biological sciences, chemistry and
physics.
Students with a degree in Exercise
Science can be employed in a multitude of environments such as
fitness centers, spas, YM and YWCAs, cardiac rehabilitation
