Jewell McRae Carmichael

Graduated from Winthrop College
in 1942. She received her Master’s degree from the University
of Tennessee and taught physical education and distributive
education. She has spent most of her career as a consultant for
marketing and distributive education with the South Carolina
Department of Education. She is a member of the South Carolina
Employees Association Board, Florence Community Concert
Association, and The Florence Little Theater Association. She
is active with the Winthrop Alumni Association including serving
as a member of the executive board. In addition, Ms. Carmichael
has held leadership positions with Pilot International
(civic/service club of executive and professional women with
clubs in 9 countries).
In recognition
of her service in Distributive Education Clubs of America, she
was a charter inductee into the South Carolina Distributive
Education Clubs of America Hall of Fame in 1990. She is a
published poet in
Wildflowers Expressions and has
published a history of the Baptist Church in Dillon entitled
Together Toward Tomorrow.
It is with
great pleasure that we, the current staff and faculty, welcome
Jewell McRae Carmichael as a member of the class of 2002
Distinguished Alumni.
Martha Sue “Mickey” Taylor

Dr. Taylor graduated from Winthrop
College in 1960. She received her Master’s degree from the
University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Doctorate from the
University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Dr. Taylor provided
guidance and leadership as a member of the Winthrop University
faculty and Department Chair over a twenty-year period. She is
an acknowledged expert in curriculum development in health and
physical education and continues to work as a consultant in this
area. She has presented at numerous state, regional and
national conferences and is currently serving as co-chair of the
Middle School Assessment team for SCPEAP.
Her membership activities include:
The American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation
and Dance (AAHPERD), Delta Psi Kappa, Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa
Phi, South Carolina Association of Health, Physical Education,
Recreation and Dance (SCAHPERD) several offices held, Southern
Carolina Association of Teacher Educators and the Southern
Association for Physical Education of College Women.
It is with great pleasure that we,
the current staff and faculty, welcome Mickey Taylor as a member
of the class of 2002 Distinguished Alumni .
Margaret Elizabeth
Gamble

Ms. Gamble graduated from Winthrop
College in 1967. She received her Master’s degree from Winthrop
in 1971. She taught physical education in Lancaster Schools.
In addition to teaching physical education ,she was a bus driver
training instructor for the South Carolina Department of
Education, Guidance Counselor, and Assistant Principal at Andrew
Jackson High School, Assistant Principal at Lancaster High
School, and Principal at Heath Springs Elementary School. Ms.
Gamble has served on accreditation teams, various committees and
with education groups. She is very active as a Winthrop Alum.
While serving as principal at Heath
Springs, the school was twice recognized with the School
Incentive Award for improving test scores. In addition, Ms.
Gamble recruited 30 business partners for the school and was the
first school in Lancaster County to have a local area network of
computers in each classroom.
In retirement , Ms. Gamble
continues to maintain a busy schedule. She serves on the Dreher
High School Foundation Board of Directors, Secretary of
Lancaster Retired Educators Association, and President-elect of
the United Way of Lancaster County, in addition to her work as
the Reunion Chair for Winthrop Class of 1967.

Margaret Elizabeth Gamble as a member of the class of 2002
Distinguished Alumni.
Robert Dean Boyd

Graduated from Winthrop College in
1987. He is the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach of
Marlboro County High School. He received the Region Five 4-A
Coach of the Year in 1998 and 1999, High School Sports Report’s
South Carolina Football Coach of the Year, South Carolina ACA
Football Coach of the Year, WBTV Doug Shaw Memorial Coach of the
Year for 1998, and was named by CBS Early Show and USA Today as
one of the top ten most caring coaches in 2000.
Dr. Boyd received an Ed.D. in Child
in Youth Studies from Nova Southeastern University and a
Masters in Arts in Sport Science from the United States Sports
Academy. He currently serves as President of the South Carolina
Athletic Administrators’ Association. In addition, he serves on
the South Carolina Football Coaches’ Association Board of
Directors, is the Region 3 State Director of Strength Coaches’
Association, and is a member of the Bennettsville Rotary Club.
Dr. Boyd is the father of Katie and
Susan and is the husband of the former Leigh Sherer of York, SC.
