Welcome to Health and Physical Education

The physical education program provides exciting opportunities in teaching and non-teaching options in the fields of activity, sport, wellness, and athletic training. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Physical Education at Winthrop University may choose from three options. The teacher certification option prepares students to teach physical education in grade levels from kindergarten through secondary school. The fitness/wellness option prepares students for a variety of career fields such as lifetime fitness, and outdoor education. The athletic training option provides a program of studies for students seeking certification as athletic trainers.

A major in Sport Management, offered jointly by the College of Business Administration and the Richard W. Riley College of Education, is housed and administered through the Department of Physical Education.  The sports management curriculum is designed to prepare students for a variety of exciting careers. Growth in professional sports, intercollegiate athletics, recreation, corporate fitness, private health clubs, sports broadcasting and writing, and a constant media exposure combine to make sports management a diverse and dynamic field.
