Physical
Education K-12 Teacher Certification
Department of Physical Education and
Health at Winthrop University has a long and distinguish tradition of
providing school systems with bright, well-prepared and dedicated
teachers. The curriculum in the Teacher Certification Program reflects
current educational trends and prepares students for teaching
opportunities in grades k-12 in both the public and private sectors.
Students enrolled in the Certification Program will complete the General
Education and Physical Education
Core curriculums
as they
begin their specialized studies in education.
In addition to the completion of the required coursework, students
must seek admission to the Teacher Education Program. All students
seeking admission must meet the following requirements:
- Completion of a minimum of 45
semester hours, fifteen of which must be completed at
Winthrop University.
Minimum cumulative grade
point average of 2.75 for coursework completed at Winthrop.
- Completion of the following core
courses with a grade of “C” or better in PHED 101, EDUC 110, 210 and
275.
- Passing all sections (Reading,
Writing and Mathematics) of PRAXIS I.
- Students must pass the PRAXIS II
content exam prior to graduation from the program.
- Students must take PRAXIS II PLT
prior to certification.
