About the Department
The
Center for Pedagogy is an interdisciplinary department within the
Richard W. Riley College of Education.
The Center was formed in 1995 with three main purposes: a) to
coordinate all aspects of the undergraduate and graduate core
curricula; b) to foster positive relationships between the University
and selected public schools; and c) to ensure that the Conceptual
Frameworks for the Teacher Education Program are evidenced in courses
and are associated with the undergraduate and graduate cores.
The
concept of the Center is based on the premise that the education of a
teacher is the responsibility of four groups: the Richard W. Riley
College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of
Visual and Performing Arts, and Professional Development Schools.
Each plays a key role in providing a total and well-integrated
educational experience for teachers and in investigating and promoting
the social, moral, and political implications of teaching in a
democracy.
The
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is offered through the Center for
Pedagogy and is designed to prepare individuals who are seeking
initial licensure to be a classroom teacher.
Students may pick one of the following areas of licensure at
the secondary level: Biology, Business/Marketing, English, Family and
Consumer Sciences, French, Mathematics, Spanish, or Social Studies; or
students may pick one of the following areas for certification in
Grades K-12: Art, Dance, Music, Physical Education or Theatre.
