††††††† The Winthrop University Richard W. Riley College of Education offers a variety of awards and scholarships.On the basis of specific selection criteria, applications are evaluated each spring by members of the Richard W. Riley College of Education Scholarship Committee or by specific departments or divisions.All scholarships are issued at registration for the following semester.(This information can be accessed through the COE website.)

Scholarship applications are due to Student Academic Services in 144 Withers.The Richard W. Riley College of Education scholarships are awarded without regard to race, sex, religion, age, or national origin.

Claude Shell Billings Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† This endowed scholarship was established in 1993 by the estate of Claude Alan Shell Billings class of 1917 in her memory.This scholarship will be awarded with preference given to a student majoring in Early Childhood Education.

Martha D. Bishop Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† The purpose of this scholarship is to provide for students majoring in Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education.This scholarship will be for a rising junior and is renewable if the student maintains a 3.0 grade point average.Financial need is a criteria.

Susie Kortjohn Britton Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† This scholarship was established in 1998 in honor or Susie Kortjohn Britton by her children, Mary Sue McElveen of Lake City, South Carolina and Harriett Stackhouse of Pensacola, Florida.The scholarship will be awarded to a rising junior who has been admitted into the Teacher Education Program at Winthrop University.

The Class of 1931 Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† The Class of 1931 Scholarship was established on the occasion of their 50th graduation anniversary.It is awarded to a rising senior from South Carolina who plans a career in teaching.The recipient will be chosen on the basis of leadership, scholastic aptitude, and financial need.

2.                   Rising senior

3.                   Minimum grade point average of 3.0

4.                   Plans career in teaching

The Class of 1932 Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† The Class of 1932 Scholarship was established on the occasion of their 50th class reunion.Awarded to a rising junior or senior who is a South Carolina resident and plans to make teaching a career.

Carlyle Wilson Hardin Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† The Carlyle Wilson Hardin Scholarship was established by the Junior Welfare League of Rock Hill and is to be awarded to an outstanding freshman who graduated from a high school in Rock Hill School District Three.This award was established through the Alumni Association by the law firm of Kennedy, Covington, Lobdell, and Hickman of Charlotte, North Carolina and Rock Hill, South Carolina in memory of Carlyle Wilson Hardin, a 1975 Winthrop Alumni.

Dr. James E. Colbert Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† The Dr. James E. Colbert Scholarship was established in 1993 by Mrs. Anita M. Colbert, Class of 1949, friends, members of the College of Education , education majors from the 1960ís, 70ís, and early 80ís in memory of Dr. James E. Colbert, educator and faculty member of the Winthrop University College of Education.The scholarship will be awarded with preference given to a secondary education minor.

Elva Epps Eddleman Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† Established in 1994 by Mrs. Elva Epps Eddleman, Class of 1940, in memory of her husband, Henry C. Eddleman, Jr.; her aunt, Ms. Iva Epps Frierson; her grandfather, James Epps; and her mother, Ms. Ruth Mills Epps.This is a permanent endowment funded to create financial assistance to one or more undergraduate students at Winthrop University.Scholarship will be awarded with preference given to high achieving students majoring in education.Financial need may be a consideration.††

††††††††††††††† This scholarship was established by Miss Ruth Cornelia Keever to enable a female South Carolina Student to obtain a degree in Elementary Education.The recipient should be a rising junior or senior.

The English Bostic Rogers Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† The English Bostic Rogers Scholarship was established by Mr. And Mrs. Weldon Rogers for a student seeking a degree in Early Childhood Education.

J.J. Godbold Endowed Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† This scholarship was established in 1992 by Alumni of Rock Hill High School in honor of Mr. John J. Godbold because of his love of young people and his dedication to their education.Mr. Godbold served as principal of Rock Hill High School from 1943 to 1967.Recipients must be full-time students who plan to pursue a career in teaching secondary education.Financial assistance is a criteria and preference will be given to a resident of South Carolina.

The Jackson Sistersí Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† The Jackson Sistersí Scholarship was established by Mr. Ben Martin in honor of his wife, Margaret Jackson Martin, and her two sisters, Sarah Jackson and Mary Jackson.This scholarship is to be awarded to a student in the field of teaching from Pickens, Spartanburg, or Greenville County.

1.                   Resident of Pickens, Spartanburg, or Greenville County

2.                   Rising sophomore, junior, or senior

Bobbie Dianne Graham Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† This scholarship was established in memory of Bobbie Dianne Graham by her family and friends in the College of Education.It is awarded to a junior or senior who shows a sincere desire to pursue Special Education as a career.

Louise Lanneau Clyburn Mangum Endowed Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† Established in March of 1993 by Katherine M. Brewer, Class of 1968.This scholarship is a permanent endowment fund.It was created to honor the memory of Louise Lanneau Clyburn Mangum, Class of 1993, and to provide financial assistance to one or more students at Winthrop University.This scholarship will be awarded with first preference given to a female graduating from Lancaster High School or Andrew Jackson High School and second preference given to a female graduating from one of the other Lancaster County high schools majoring in education or family and consumer sciences.

Flora Timmons Henry Plumer Endowed Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† Established in 1997 by Mary and Henry McCarty and Heiman F. McCarty, Jr. in memory of Flora Timmons Henry Plumer, Class of 1915, to provide financial assistance for one or more undergraduate student at Winthrop University.

The Dorothy Sealy Rauch Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† The Dorothy Sealy Rauch Scholarship was established by the Winthrop Alumni Association in honor of itís former director.

3.                   Award to be made on the basis of academic merit, aptitude in Special Education, and performance in the field of Special Education

Dr. Sam Greer Teacher Education Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† This scholarship was established by Mrs. Ruth L. Greer and family and friends of Sam M. Greer.The scholarship will be awarded to a senior or MAT student in the Teacher Education Program at Winthrop University.Preference will be given to students majoring in Vocational Education who have demonstrated financial need.

1.                   Rising senior or current MAT graduate student in the Teacher Education Program

2.                   Preference given to students majoring in Vocational Education

3.                   Evidence of financial need

4.                   Fully admitted to the professional semester

5.                   Demonstrated record of professional and community services

6.                   A record to indicate that the student has the promise for professional leadership

The Marshall and Lillian Walker Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† The Marshall and Lillian Walker College of Education Endowment was established in 1998 by Marshall Walker and Lillian Cornwell Walker, Class of 1942.

Haggai Foundation:

††††††††††††††† The THA Foundation Scholarship fund is established to accept gifts from Tom Haggai and Associates in support of non-traditional students in Elementary Education at Winthrop University.THA Foundation was established by Dr. Thomas Haggai with its purpose to provide assistance ďso young people will be prepared to help the youth of our country.Ē

††††††††††††††† Criteria:

1.                   Students must make a commitment to teach at the Elementary school grade level

2.                   Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.75 or higher

3.                   Must be a full-time student

4.                   Must be a citizen of the United States

5.                   Recipient must be a non-traditional student

American Schlafhorst Foundation Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarships to students from York County in South Carolina and Gaston, Mecklenburg, Cabbarrus, and Union counties in North Carolina who are majoring in education.

1.                   Recipient must be from York County, South Carolina or Gaston, Mecklenburg, Cabbarrus, and Union counties, North Carolina

2.                   Majoring in education

3.                   Rising senior

Eula Fudge Thomas and Claude A. Thomas Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† This scholarship will be awarded to a rising senior majoring in education who is from Florence County in South Carolina and who has shown academic improvement.

Dr. Charlene Francys Travis Scholarship:

††††††††††††††† The Dr. Charlene Francys Travis Scholarship was established in 1994 by Troy and Rebekah Travis in memory of Troyís mother.This is a permanent endowment fund created to provide financial assistance for one or more undergraduate students at Winthrop University.

††††††††††††††† These scholarships were established by Fred K. Werts in memory of his wife, Ruby Hipp Werts, Class of 1932.Awards are made annually with preference given to students majoring in Elementary Education.

1.                   Resident of Chesterfield County majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences Or a resident of Chesterfield County in any field of study Or any student from South Carolina majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences provided that no one applies from Chesterfield County

2.                   Current freshman

4.                   A citizen of the United States
