Digital Portfolios
What went
digital:
Students take EDUC 490: Capstone for Educational Leaders during
their last semester of study at Winthrop University while completing the
final internship in the schools. The primary focus of this two-credit
course is to support student’s completion of an exit portfolio. Students will develop and present a portfolio that demonstrates
thorough synthesis and evaluation their growth as an educational leader.
The primary purpose of this portfolio is for each student to demonstrate
competence to exit (graduate and obtain certification) the Teacher
Education Program of the Richard W. Riley College of Education at
Winthrop University.
How we went digital:
The decision to move to digital portfolios was made during the first
year of our TLC project (1999-2000). However, the digital concept was
developed in three stages. We began by researching and discussing with
others who were working to develop digital portfolios. Then we used the
time and resources of a Sunray Academy in November 2000 to develop our
concept for the portfolio. Next, we brought the concept to the EDUC 490
teaching team for discussion and revisions. These steps were important
to build consensus and ownership for the idea.
At the same time, we ran a pilot of the digital
portfolio project with one student during the Fall 2000 course. This
student completed a web-based portfolio with digitized video. As P-12
students are shown, this portfolio was burned to CD rather than
published. His work provided an example for faculty and students as we
began the second stage of our pilot. The second stage in the Spring 2001
required an entire section (N=27) of the course complete digital
portfolios. Overall, we are very pleased with the outcome of this
two-stage pilot. Our goal is to have all students in all sections of
EDUC 490 complete digital portfolios in Spring 2002.
