Procedures:  Activities before the computer
  1. Put one large William Johnson print on each table and announce that the class will be discussing an artist that we all have something in common with.
  2. Challenge the students to look closely at their print and find some things that are not right and to try and figure out what they have in common with the artist.  Pass the prints from table to table until everyone has seen each print.
  3. Hold up one print at a time and ask volunteers to point out their discoveries.  Point out exaggerated hands, feet, etc, missing table legs, heads with out faces, and so on.  Discuss reasons that he may have painted in this style.  Ask the students if they have figured out what they have in common with the artist (Lived in SC).  Ask the students to guess how long ago the pictures were painted.
  4. Ask the class what they can tell about the artist by looking at his art. (Black, lived in city, etc.)
  5. Distribute attached sheet to class and explain that the students will be going to the computer to research William Johnson and complete their sheets in small groups (tables).
