Students will listen to the book, identify the problem,
and make predictions. Students will vote on favorite cake, make graph, and
analyze data. |

| Procedures: |
Activities before the computer:
- In the classroom, the students will be read Bunny Cakes.
-
At the appropriate spot the teacher will ask, “Why isn’t Max getting what
he wants at the grocery store?” (He can’t write, so the grocer does not understand
his list.)
While at the computer
- In the computer lab have the students vote on their favorite cake,
Max’s or Rubys’s.
- Divide the students into partners. Each group will use
Excel to record and graph the data. The teacher will walk the class through
this using Excel and a multimedia projector.
- Open Excel.
- Type Max’s Cake
in cell B1 and Ruby’s Cake in cell C1.
- In B2 and C2 put the number
of votes for each cake.
- Select the data by left clicking in A1 and dragging
the mouse to C2. This should highlight your data table.
- From the menu bar
select Insert.
- Select Chart from the drop down menu.
- Select
Column and hit Next.
- On the next screen also select Column
and hit Next.
- Click in the box that says Chart Title and type
Our Favorite Cake.
- Click the Finish button. You should see
the graph on your spreadsheet. To make the units one, click the value axis
you want to change.
- On the Format menu, click Selected
Axis, and then click the Scale tab.
- In the Display units
list, click the units you want or type a numeric value.
- Then enlarge the
chart by clicking in a corner, holding down the mouse button and dragging
.
