  • Apply those definitions to an online article.
  • Discuss and support his/her opinions with other students.

Setting:  Computer lab
Procedures:

(Day 1) Lesson plan found at: http://www.econedlink.org/lessons/index.cfm?lesson=EM155

Prior to going to the computer lab, teacher should complete the lesson about innovations and inventions using the Rube Goldberg cartoon as a visual.  The vocabulary for this lesson:

  • Invention: a new product created by an inventor

  • Innovation: the use of an already existing product in a new way

  • Entrepreneur: people who see opportunities to make new products or start new businesses

  • Business Risk: a chance a business person takes when a new business is started

(Day 2) Before students go to the computer lab, the teacher must have the necessary websites bookmarked on the computers or create a web page that has links to the sites.  Review the vocabulary terms from the previous lesson.  Let students choose a website from the pre-selected list that interests them.  As they read the articles, students should answer the questions on the Entrepreneurs, Inventions, and Innovations worksheet.  Early finishers can read the other articles that interest them.

(Day 3) Have students who read the same article discuss the questions they answered in small groups.  Wrap up lessons with class discussion about inventions, innovations, and the role of entrepreneurs.
