Iowa's Country Schools: Landmarks of Learning edited by William L. Sherman

       This book is an extensive work on the country schools of Iowa.  It includes chapters on the history of one-room schools, preservation, an eighth grade graduation test, and details on one-room schools in every county of Iowa.  The book includes many photographs.  This book is a must for anyone interested in the history of one-room schools.

America's Country Schools by Andrew Gulliford 

      This is an excellent resource on the curriculum. architecture, and the lives of country school teachers.  The book has plenty of photographs and an great index of information on schools in each state.  A superb resource for anyone interested in country schools.  

Country School Memories: an Oral History of One-room Schooling by Robert Leight and Alice D. Rinehart. 

     This book chronicles the oral histories of several teachers and students that attended one-room schools in Pennsylvania.  The book also includes chapters on the history of one-room schools, teaching and learning in a one-room school, and schoolhouse memories.   

Legacy of One-room Schools by Myrna J. Grove 

     The author chronicles the history of one-room schools in the northwest territory.  It includes chapters on school laws, school structures, teacher certification, discipline and curriculum.  The book includes many historic and recent pictures of one-room schools.

 One Room School by Laurence Pringle and illustrated by Barbara Garrison

     This picture book is a story of one-year in the life of School 14 in Mendon, New York.  Beautiful illustrations grace each page and are sure to elicit the interest of young readers.

School Women of the Prairies and Plains  by Mary H. Cordier

     The author provides a glimpse into the lives of five country school teachers.  It also includes chapters on the historical setting, education of teachers, and living conditions. 

One-room Schools in Monongalia County West Virginia by Casteel, Nesius, & Fasching

     The authors provide detailed accounts of schools and teachers in this West Virginia County.  They also include several pages of pictures of schools and classes.  

One-room School: Teaching in 1930's Western Oklahoma  by Donna M. Stephens

     This book is a case study of the life Of Helen Morris.  It gives details into the joys and difficulties of teaching on the frontier.
