Payne (2003) indicates that all individuals know (and know them very well) the hidden rules, beliefs and patterns of behavior of the group in which they were raised. In most countries of the world there are 3 main groups: people of poverty, people of the middle class, and people of wealth. Each of these groups has a different set of rules, beliefs, and patterns of behavior.
People of poverty often view their future or destiny as something that occurs by chance. I have often heard children of poverty state that they got a good grade on a test because they were “lucky”.
Most people of the middle class view destiny as a choice one makes. I can choose to do better in a class by studying. I can choose to become a baker or a teacher.
Most people of wealth see destiny as tradition, something that has been and will continue to be a part of their lives. I go to Yale because my parents went to Yale. We vacation in Vail because my family always vacations in Vail.
