M&M Excel Activity
1. Open Microsoft Excel. ![]()
2. Enter data from the Data Collection Sheet into the spreadsheet.

3. Enter this formula into cell B8: =B2+B3+B4+B5+B6+B7
Hit the Enter Key on
the keyboard to accept this formula.
Note: You may have more or less cells with colors listed in them depending
on how many colors you had in your bag.
4. Enter this formula into cell C8: = C2+C3+C4+C5+C6+C7
Hit the Enter Key on the keyboard to accept this formula.
An equals sign is what tells Excel to perform a calculation.
5. Select the range of spreadsheet cells by dragging the mouse over the color and number data. Be sure not to select the Total row or any blank rows. This will confuse the computer and your chart will not look right.

6. Choose INSERT/ CHART
from the menu or click on the Chart Wizard button
on
the toolbar. The following dialog box will pop up:

7. Select Column from the Chart type options and click Next.
8. The dialog box for step two of the Chart Wizard looks like this:

Since
you already selected your data, everything in this window should default to the
correct settings. If you want to see what Series in means, you can
switch it from Columns to Rows and then back to Columns.
Click
Next.
9. Step 3 of the Chart Wizard looks like this:

Type M&M’s in the Title box, Color in the X axis box and Number in the Y axis box. Click Next.
10. Step 4 of the Chart Wizard looks like this:

This is asking if you want your chart to appear with the data you entered into the spreadsheet or on a new page. You can leave it at the default – As object in Sheet1.
11. Click Finish. Your chart should now appear with your data. Your chart is selected. In order to print both your chart and your spreadsheet click in any cell (click off your chart) and then go to FILE/ PRINT.
12. Redo steps 5-11 but instead of Column, choose Pie chart. At Step 3 of the Chart Wizard, click on the Data Labels tab and choose Show Percent. Then click Next and continue as before.
Note that this only makes one Pie chart and it is of your actual numbers. Print your Pie chart.
