Logging into Birdnest:

  1. Open Front Page;
  2. Click on the File menu, drag down to “Open Site;”
  3. In the box, type in: http://www.birdnest.org/your_username
  4. Press Return on the keyboard and it will ask you for your username and password;
  5. UserName = acc\your_username
  6. Password = the same password you use in the lab.

 

Creating Pages

Click on the File Menu, drag down to “New Page;”

Select the type of page you want, usually it will be “Normal Page.”

 

Inserting a Picture

  1. Click on the icon for “Insert Picture from File”

  1. Navigate to your Z Drive and choose the correct file.
  2. Remember that you must save the picture to your Z drive before you insert it.
  3. Remember that when you save your page Front Page will Embed the picture for you.

                                         

Inserting a Background Picture

  1. Right Click in the middle of the page and drag down to “Page Properties;”
  2. Click on the background tab;
  3. Find the space for picture and follow the directions for inserting a picture
  4. OR—Click on the Format menu and drag down to Background. Follow the directions above.

 

Creating an Internal, or Relative Link

  1. Highlight the text or image you want to use as a link;
  2. Click on the Hyperlink button.

  1. Scroll down until you find the name of the page you want to link to. Remember that you can’t link to a page that has not been created.

 

Creating an External, or Absolute Link

  1. Follow the same steps as for an Internal, or Relative Link
  2. In the URL box, type the full address. Be careful, one typo and the link doesn’t work.

 

n       OR --

  1. On the page, start typing the URL you want to link to. If you start it with http://  it will assume you are creating an external link. When you finish typing the link press the space bar or the enter key and the text will turn blue and underlined, indicating the link has been created. Like above, you must be sure the link is typed correctly or it will not work. Copying the link from your browser and pasting it into Front Page is recommended.

Assigning Alt Text to an Image:

  1. Right click on the image and select Picture Properties;
  2. Click on the General Tab;
  3. Type your text in the space beside Text:.

 

Creating Tables

1. Place your cursor on your web page where you want the table to be.

2. Go to Table/Insert Table. You will get the dialog box below.

3.  Set the number of rows (across) and columns (down) you want, if you want it aligned left, right or center and how thick you want your outlines to be (Border Size).  
Note:  Setting your border size to zero will make the borders of the table invisible.

4.  Click OK.  Your table should now be placed on your web page.

5.  To adjust the width of your table, hold your mouse down on the far right border of your table and drag in.  To adjust the height of your table or a table row, hold your mouse down on the bottom border of the table or row and drag in to make it smaller and out to make it bigger.

6.  To add/delete columns or rows after you have drawn your table, click once inside your table and then go to the TABLE menu. 

DELETING ROWS, CELLS, COLUMNS
To delete a cell, table, column or row:

        Click once inside the appropriate cell.
        Go to the TABLE menu and slide down to SELECT (table, cell, column, row).
        Go to the TABLE menu and slide down to DELETE CELLS.

INSERTING ROWS and COLUMNS

Click once inside the cell you want your addition to be beside.
Go to the TABLE menu and slide down to INSERT ROWS OR COLUMNS.
A dialog box will appear that allows you to choose rows or columns, set the number, and where they will appear in your table (above or below, right or left of the cell where your cursor is.

INSERTING AND MERGING CELLS

To insert additional cells in your table:
Click once inside the cell you want your new cell to be beside.
Go to the TABLE menu and slide down to INSERT CELL.
A new cell will be desplayed in your table.

To merge two cells:
Highlight the cells you want to become one.
Go to the TABLE menu and select MERGE CELLS.


7.  Additional table options are available to you using the TABLE TOOLBAR.  If your table toolbar is not visible even when you have clicked inside your table, go to the VIEW ... TABLE TOOLBAR.

     Using this toolbar, you can color the insides of your table cells, align text and graphics inside your table, merge and split cells and insert rows or columns.
