*1. Go to www.eoc.sc.gov and click on Information for Families. Read the brochures for the grade levels you will be certified to teach. The brochures only cover English Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, and Science. If you aren't teaching in one of these areas, i.e. physical education, music, art, then only read the first page of any of the brochures. The first page provides broad information about standards in general.
*2. Go to http://www.ed.sc.gov/agency/Standards-and-Learning/Academic-Standards/index.html to access your content standards. Click on Standards, not on the title of your subject area! Save a copy of your standards to your z drive, or thumb drive. In other words, be sure you can access them in class. (The website isn't always reliable so it is better to have your own copy.) Skim your standards. If you are ELEM, SPED, or ECED, read at least three subject area standards for a single grade level.
*3. Read the National Educational Technology Standards for Students at http://www.iste.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=NETS
*4. Read the following from the Ohio Department of Education at this link https://ims.ode.state.oh.us/ODE/IMS/SBE/ :
- What is standards-based education?
- Why are standards important?
- Why are standards useful?
- How can standards be useful to you?
- What is the history of the standards movement?
5. Standards Based Education Reform and English Language Learners:
http://www.ncela.gwu.edu/pubs/tasynthesis/framing/2standardsbased.htm
This article gives a good overview of standards in general as well as how they
are implemented with ELLs.
