Getting Good Recommendations

  1. Provide me with a short summary of your academic and related accomplishments.  If possible, give me a simple resume.

 

  1. Give me sufficient information about what you are applying for so I can make an informed recommendation.

 

  1. Do NOT ask me for a recommendation if:

·        You do not give me at least 5 school days prior notice.  Also, ask me if I think I can finish the recommendation in time.

·        You have not had me for a class or interacted with me in a way that would allow me to have sufficient information about you to use in the recommendation.

·        You don’t think I could give you a good recommendation.

 

  1. Some tips for getting good recommendations:

·        Ask in person if possible

·        Ask the person if they think they will be able to write a good recommendation.

·        Provide any needed forms with all necessary parts completed by you, addressed envelopes, and any other information to make writing the reference easier for the writer.
