Frequently
Asked Questions
I have an undergraduate degree in something other than
education, but would like to teach. Can I start this program?
No, you must have a current teaching certificate to enter the
program. However, we offer an M.A.T. degree in several areas for those
seeking initial certification to teach.
What are the requirements to enter the program? Do I have to take the
GRE?
The program has several requirements. First, you must
provide a copy of your current teaching certificate (from South Carolina or
another state). Second, you must provide an official transcript. If
your undergraduate GPA is less than 2.75, you must take the GRE.
Finally, you must provide two letters of reference.
I'm not certified in middle level. Will this give me
certification?
Not necessarily. Although we can work with you in your
selection of courses for the content areas, this program does not lead to
initial certification. If your state provides you a list of needed
courses, we can assist in allowing you to take some of those requirements within
the program.
I read that this is a cohort-based program. What does that
mean?
We start groups of students at specific times during
the year. Students in that group, or cohort, take all their middle level
education classes together in a set cycle. Other courses, such as the
courses in the subject areas, are taken with other students at different times,
but the cohort stays together during the middle level courses.
Does that mean I can't take any course I want to any time?
Some courses are offered every semester (such as Educational
Research). However, the middle level education courses are offered in a
set sequence for the cohort. Those courses are structured and must be
taken during those specific semesters.
