Winthrop University Chapter of
Palmetto State Teachers Association
During the year of Spring 2003, the information of a South Carolina Teaching Organization was brought to Winthrop University. The organization was described as an organization that was established in 1976 to give educators in South Carolina a choice. The organization and its members believe that every child in South Carolina has the right to a free, uninterrupted, quality education.
The organization provides a professional liability insurance program that covers any person who is an active associate or student member of the association. The organization also provides legal assistance, scholarship fund, legislative voice, student chapters, statewide representation, local chapters, professional programs, publications, variety of benefits, reasonable dues, travel benefits, education financing and much more.
The organization was brought by Doug Rucker, a representative from the Columbia office, and Dr. David Vawter paved the way from that time on. With the help of Dr. Christine Maxwell, the first meeting was held in Spring 2003 and the organization was started. At that time, the first set of officers, Chartering Officers, were elected and the chartering process began. Ten other students that were interested in participating in the cause of this organization signed the chartering packet as members and the organization was chartered on the campus of Winthrop University in Fall 2003.
