Field Experiences Required for Education Majors

Experiences in the public schools are your opportunity to view first-hand what you are learning in your courses.  Many teachers in the districts surrounding Winthrop’s campus welcome Winthrop students into their classrooms.

When you visit a teacher’s classroom, you are a guest of the school and represent Winthrop University.  Please follow these guidelines when you are in the public schools:

  • Sign-in at the main office as a visitor.
  • Dress appropriately by observing school dress codes.
  • Plan your travel time accordingly and be ready to observe in the classroom at the time you are scheduled to visit.
  • Contact the teacher as soon as possible if you must cancel a visit due to illness or emergency.

The courses below require field experiences in the public schools that are arranged by the field placement coordinator in Student Academic Services:

  • EDUC 210 requires 8 hours of observation (4 visits at 2 hours each).

  • EDUC 250 requires 12 hours of observation (6 visits at 2 hours each or 8 visits at 90 minutes each).

  • Register for an observation time when you register for the course and select from elementary, middle and high school sites.
