Summary of Lesson:  As an introduction to a cross-curriculum Related Arts
unit taught in Spanish and Art, students will explore famous pieces of art by 
Hispanic artists.

Lesson Details

Objectives:
The students will identify the artists of 10 pieces of Hispanic art.

The students will discuss the use of murals to educate the Mexican people.

The students will define cubism and name one artist associate with this 
movement.

Setting: 1 computer classroom – 40 minute Related Arts class

Procedures:                   Time:

Distribute graphic organizer to students as they enter.

Introduce topic by displaying poster of Picasso’s Don Quixote.  Have 
students write on their worksheets 3 words to describe the painting.
Ask for some of their descriptions and explain that Picasso was a very 
famous artist from Spain.
Explain that they will be seeing some famous pieces of art that were
created by Hispanic artists from Mexico and Spain.

Narrate: The Aztecs were a group of people who lived in Mexico
before Spain came to rule.  Give background of statue and allow
students to fill in worksheets.

Ask students to define mural and give an example from Fort Mill / 
Charlotte.  Explain that in Mexico when there was little or no public education system, murals were used to teach the people history and politics.  Diego Rivera was one of the most famous muralists in Mexico.  Ask students how murals could teach people, why they were important, what would they paint about if they wanted to teach the people of Fort Mill.

Tell students that they will now be seeing art from Spain.

Introduce Velazquez as one of the most famous Spanish artists.  Ask students what they think the artist shown is painting.  Explain that the artist is Velazquez and point out the mirror’s reflection.  Who do they think the people are?  Have them write their answers on the worksheet.

Tell students that Picasso was the painter, reminding them that Picasso painted the poster they saw at the beginning of class.

Ask students what they think he looked like… tall, short, handsome, blond, dark?

Technology Specific Activity/Project Description:

Teacher uses projector with computer to display websites in whole class setting. 

*Websites can be bookmarked in a folder for students to explore on their own whenever they have finished class work early.

 

Assessment:  Students complete graphic organizer which will be collected and reviewed, student understanding will also be evaluated orally through class discussion.
