Mardis Gras

Summary of Lesson:   While studying the Louisiana Purchase in Social Studiesthe 8th grade French classes will be exploring the history and activities of Mardi Gras.  This lesson will give an overview of the event in preparation for a math lesson on planning a trip to New Orleans, LA  with their French III class in 2006.
Lesson Details  

 

Objectives:  Students will appreciate the history of Mardi Gras.
Students will create a PowerPoint presentation on Mardi Gras.
Students will present a PowerPoint presentation on Mardi Gras.
Setting: Computer lab, classroom
Procedures:    Have students create a PowerPoint presentation on Mardi Gras in groups of 3 or 4.  Each student will be responsible for producing 3 slides.
The presentation must include the following:
History
Participants
Activities
Food
Mardi Gras in France or Belgium
The slides must include text and pictures.
The background and pictures should reflect the topic.
A works cited slide must be at the end of the presentation.
The presentation will be shown to the class ( and possibly parents) in order to gain an understanding of Mardi Gras prior to planning a trip to New Orleans for the event.
Technology 
Specific Activity:

Students will create and show a PowerPoint presentation on Mardi Gras.
Students will research Mardi Gras on the Internet.
