Zoo de Madrid

Title:  Zoo de Madrid

Summary of Lesson:   Students will learn and review animal vocabulary by taking a virtual trip through the Madrid Zoo.  They will make an animal puppet and then create a PowerPoint slide describing it in Spanish to be included in a class presentation.
Lesson Details
Objectives: 

Students will recognize new and review old animal vocabulary.
Students will recognize cognates.
Students will answer questions about the zoo.
Students will state the similarities and differences between a zoo in Spain and a zoo in the US.
Students will create animal bag puppets.
Students will create a PowerPoint slide about an animal using Spanish vocabulary.

Setting: Classroom, Computer lab
Procedures:    Day One – 40 minute class
The students have learned 10 animals in Spanish prior to this activity.
Before going to the computer lab, ask students to brainstorm a list of animals and other attractions they would find at the zoo in Madrid.  Would there be any differences from what they would find at a zoo in the US?  These answers may be written on a chalkboard/whiteboard
Have students go to www.zoomadrid.com .  They will answer questions concerning items about the Madrid Zoo on a worksheet.
Day Two and Day Three – 40 minute classes
Have students make paper bag animal puppets.  Examples of puppets made in previous classes will be shown.  They may create an animal of their choice.  If they do not know the word for their puppet in Spanish, have them find it in a Spanish/English dictionary.  When finished, the students will take pictures of their animals using a digital camera.
Day Four
Have students create a PowerPoint slide on their puppet, including the following information:

Me llamo/Se llama (name)
Soy/Es un (name of animal)
Soy/Es (colors of the animal)
Soy/Es de (location)
Soy/Es (adjectives)

The slides can be combined and shown in class on the Infocus machine.
Technology 
Specific Activity:

Students will access website on the Madrid Zoo and answer questions.
Students will take digital photos of their puppets.
Students will create a PowerPoint slide on their puppet using Spanish vocabulary.
Students will use Microsoft Word to type a response to a question on bullfighting.
