Lesson Plan 2

Title:  The Circulatory System
Subject Areas:
Science, Language Arts, & Technology
Grade Level:  Fifth

Summary of Lesson:   This unit lasts several days.  During this time, students will study the circulatory system, conduct research using both conventional and Internet sites, and – working with two or three peers - create a PowerPoint presentation with at least 6 slides.
Lesson Details
Objectives: 
  1. The student will be able to identify the parts of the circulatory system and explain the function of each.
  2. The student will be able create a PowerPoint presentation.
Setting: Computer Lab and Multiple Computer Classroom
Procedures: 
  1. Introduction of project and unit.
  2. Classroom instruction on the circulatory system. (Use textbook as guide or foundation.)
  3. Conduct research on the circulatory system using both conventional materials and Internet sites. May be done in classroom.
  4. Model for students the use of Microsoft PowerPoint. (Use ProView or similar technology) Provide a tutorial for students to practice skills. Classroom or lab.
  5. Students work in small groups and produce a PowerPoint presentation based on their research. Lab or classroom.
  6. Students will share their presentation with classmates.
Technology 
Specific Activity:
  1. The student will review information at specific web sites as assigned by the teacher.
  2. The student will learn how to produce a PowerPoint presentation; and will demonstrate this skill by creating a presentation on the circulatory system.
Assessment:  The student will be graded based on a checklist or rubric. An example follows.

Group uses at least 2 fonts and 2 sizes.
Group includes at least 6 slides
Group inserted at least 3 graphics.
Group utilized appropriate navigational buttons.
Group listed sources and included one hyperlink.

Writing Skills
Presentation contains main ideas and supporting details.

Vocabulary is developmentally appropriate.
Use of capitalization is developmentally appropriate.
Use of punctuation is developmentally appropriate.
There are no spelling errors,
OR no errors that detract from the comprehension.

Major parts of the circulatory system are identified and their function explained.
