Title:  Symbiotic Relationships

Summary of Lesson:   Students will create a database documenting examples of symbiotic relationships including: mutualism, commensalisms, and parasitism.
Lesson Details
Objectives: 
  1. The student will be able to define and give examples of symbiosis.
  2. The student will be able to define and give examples of mutualism.
  3. The student will be able to define and give examples of commensalisms.
  4. The student will be able to define and give examples of parasitism.
  5. The student will demonstrate the ability to analyze and interpret information from various sources.
  6. The student will develop a database containing information and examples of symbiotic relationships.
Setting: Computer Lab and Multiple Computer Classroom
Procedures: 
  1. Introduction of project and unit.
  2. Classroom instruction on symbiosis. (Use textbook as guide or foundation.)
  3. Model for students the construction of a simple database. Provide a tutorial for students to practice skills. Classroom or lab.
  4. Conduct research on symbiosis using both conventional materials and Internet sites.  Search for information using Ask Jeeves.  (“Where can I find an example of symbiosis?” Substitute commensalism, mutualism, and parasitism for symbiosis.)  May be done in classroom or lab.
  5. Students will print their databases and compile the information into simple booklets.
  6. Students will share their publications with classmates.
Technology 
Specific Activity:
  1. The student will use the Internet to find information on symbiosis, commensalism, mutualism, and parasitism.
  2. The student will learn how to create a database using Microsoft Access.
  3. The student will publish a booklet containing information collected in a database on symbiotic relationships.
Assessment:  The student will be graded based on a checklist or rubric.  See one example below
