Summary of Lesson:   Over the next several weeks fourth grade art students will explore the world of M. C. Escher and create their own original tessellations.
Lesson Details
Objectives: 
  1. The student will be able to practice creating an original tessellation using the computer.
  2. The student will be able to create a tessellation.
Setting: One computer classroom
Procedures:  Activities before the computer
  1. The teacher will introduce the artist M. C. Escher and his work.
  2. She will focus a discussion around his patterns and tessellations.
  3. The teacher will announce that the students will each be creating original tessellations, but first, they will experiment with tessellations on the computer (downloaded Tesselmania demo program off internet)

During the computer

  1. First, the teacher will use the proview projector and introduce the program to the students. 
  2. Then, the students will each get 3 minutes to experiment on the computer program with the tessellations.

After the computer

  1. After experimenting on the computer, students will be given a post-it note and start cutting and rotating the post-it.
  2.   Students will trace their tessellation in their choice of pattern onto a piece of paper.
  3. The students will add color and finish projects.
Assessment: 

Students will be graded by rubric on their process and product of an original tessellation.

State Standards Met:         
  • The student will develop basic technology skills (Apply technologies to strategies for problem solving and critical thinking.)   
ISTE Standards met:
  •   Use keyboards and other common input and output devices.
  • Use technology resources for problem solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.
