Under the Sea Lesson

Summary of Lesson:   Students will work in groups to research one of five species of ocean creatures and produce an oral report with visuals.
Lesson Details
Objectives: 

The student will be able to:

  1. Describe the types of life found in the ocean
  2. Describe and illustrate their animals place in the food chain..
  3. Tell how the animals interact with their environment.
 
Setting:  Classroom and computer lab
Procedures:  Activities before the computer:
  • In the classroom students will be assigned to groups.  

While at the computer: 

  • In the computer lab, students will access the FMES website and go to the Under the Sea webquest http://www.fort-mill.k12.sc.us/fmes/under_the_sea__
    webquest.htm
      
  • Students will research their animals using the resources listed on the webquest (I am going to add a step to the webquest when I get back to school).  This will be the first entry in the resources section of the webquest:
    • Go to the Discus.  Choose Grolier.  Choose New Book of Knowledge.  Search for your creatures (for example, type crustacean in the search box).  Read the article to get a general overview of your creatures. 
  • They will use the Under the Sea worksheet to gather their data. 
Technology Specific Activity: Using a website to reinforce what has been taught in class.
