Lesson Details
Objectives:

The student will be able to help the teacher:

  1. Locate their school on the map
  2. Navigate from point A to point B on a map

Setting:  Classroom and computer lab
Procedures:
  • Students will be introduced to maps in the classroom.
  • Using the multimedia projector and  Mapquest, the teacher will pull up map using the school address.  Be sure and do this beforehand and have it saved; you may have to fiddle around with the zoom and re-centering to get the map you want.  I live in FM, so I use school as point A and my house as point B.   So I want a map that shows both, with recognizable street names.
  • When I get what I want, I save it on Mapquest and print it.
  • I make copies for the kids to have in their hands as we do this.
  • First we locate our school on the map (marked by a red star).
  • Then I show them where I live.
  • Together we use our directional skills to get me to school.
  • Then we do it again and the students work in pairs to mark the route on their maps with a highlighter.
