Rice Plantation Lesson Plan

Title:  When Rice Ruled South Carolina
Subject Areas:
South Carolina History
Grade Level:
8th grade
Teacher:  Lou Wylie
School:
Gold Hill Middle School

Summary of Lesson:  In studying the economic development and settlement of coastal South Carolina, the student must learn the importance of rice as a cash crop and the crop’s dependency on slave labor.  Students of the Piedmont have not been exposed to the large rice plantations since this area was primary cotton farms and therefore very rarely understand how labor intensive these farms were.  Therefore, South Carolina’s dependency on slave labor should become more apparent to the student.  This lesson should be placed in the historical context of settlement but should be reviewed once the class begins its study of the Civil War.
